And that engine WOULD respond to bigger cams like the LT4 HotCam because it had enough flow capacity to support making power higher up the RPM range.Īnd finally, GM built the ZZ383 which was those better FastBurn heads, a special cam (bigger even than the LT4 HotCam) and, of course, with 383ci of displacement underneath it instead of just 350. Literally exactly the same as the ZZ4 but with different heads on top. Worked well enough they sold it the next year as it's own crate motor called the FastBurn 385 (indicating it's HP, not it's displacement). That picked up 30HP and 7 ft/lbs of torque with no change to the cam. They also had a package where they swapped the stock ZZ4 heads for a set of FastBurn heads. It made 3 extra ponies and lost 2 ft/lbs of torque. One package was a ZZ4 that they installed the LT4 HotCam into. Here's the summary straight from the guys who designed and built the ZZ4.
